Distinguished and Famous people from Ceduna District
🤝 Iris Burgoyne
Mirning and Kokatha Elder Iris Burgoyne was born at Koonibba near Ceduna in 1936. She learned cultural knowledge from older generations and maintained connections with family country near Fowlers Bay. Her later public work included becoming inaugural chairperson of the Port Lincoln Aboriginal Health Service and contributing knowledge to language research on the west coast. The connection with Ceduna's surrounding district belongs to her upbringing and cultural life; her health-service leadership was in Port Lincoln. Keeping those places distinct makes the breadth of her contribution clearer.
🐟 George Angelakis
George Angelakis joined his family at Thevenard in 1936 and built an early career in fishing and community work. Fishing with his father and brother helped settle his choice of livelihood: an afternoon’s catch could be worth as much as a fortnight of labouring work. In 1945 he helped form, and became president of, the West Coast Fishermen’s Co-operative Society, which brought Greek and Australian fishermen from Thevenard and Ceduna together. Its fish-processing works opened at Thevenard the following year. He also campaigned for a community hall and helped teach English to migrants. The later Adelaide seafood business had these west-coast working and community roots.
